Rock Island Day Trip (Sept. 4)

We got to visit the Rock Islands for the first time on September 4.  We got on a boat and sped off between fluffy island mounds that are kind of like a maze in some places.  If you look up Palau, you can usually see pictures of the Rock Islands because they're beautiful and unique.

We went swimming in several different places.  In one place (above) there was white mud that people smeared all over themselves because it's supposed to be good for your skin (all the tourists were there covered in mud).  We also went to Jellyfish Lake, but unfortunately the jellyfish were mostly gone because of the drought last year, so we didn't see any.  They said the population might recover in a few months or years.  I saw some fairy terns and pied cormorants (I think) at the lake though.  And it was pretty.

Unfortunately I don't have an underwater camera, so I can't show you the fish we saw (which was one of the best parts).  We saw a couple of small sharks, lots of colorful fish around the reefs, a flounder, gobies, and a sea turtle swimming below.  We visited a place called the Cemetery (because the corals look like tombs or something) and saw a big remora swimming around.  It was incredible to see the underwater world...someone said it made them think of heaven because it was so beautiful and full of color and life.

We got to eat lunch on a little island with picnic tables.  It had a nice beach where we could splash around and take pictures.

Anyway, that was our first taste of the Rock Islands.  I'll be putting on more posts about our overnight weekend too, so keep checking back...
