We got to visit the Airai church and visit some people in the community and collect health surveys for outreach on Sabbath. There were some beautiful flowers in the area. Someone said this orchid was an introduced species. But Palau has a lot of native orchids too.
The Airai church is pretty, and it has open windows during the service. The jungle picture is the view from the Airai church fellowship hall window.
Then on Sunday we got to visit the capital of Palau in Melekeok. It was very impressive.
It seemed really Grecian-looking to me, but with a Palauan flavor (the images on the buildings all meant something in Palau symbolism. The heads in a row at the top, for example, are women because the woman is the head of Palauan society. There were birds that showed the cycle of receiving and giving in Palauan culture too).
It was very beautiful, very new-looking, and well-kept. We even got to take a back-stage tour up to the dome of the capital building.
View from the capital building.
Melekeok state office.
Next post should be about the Rock Island visit we made the weekend after. Stay tuned...
